Can I say that he's my most favorite discovered artist of 2018? I'm just gonna tell you now and get it out of the way.
It was just another random day, early in the morning and I was biking to the university, you know early morning classes, and to keep me company were my headphones of course - I know some of you think of wearing earphone while riding as a risky thing, but it's not; believe me you can hear enough to keep track of the road and traffic. Anyways, I was nearing towards the campus that this song came and, woah, it sounded really deep and soulful. Btw, have you ever discovered a song you downloaded long ago but never listened to and then it plays during the shuffled queue and you're like, 'yo, this is really good!'? It was that exact song from me. The song was 'changes' by a rapper who is hard to pronounce, well actually which rapper isn't hard to pronounce, they all have these crazy stage names, but XXXTENTACION, yeah well good luck spelling that! Just to let you guys know, I've covered it, I can spell it just fine now.
XXXTENTACION first hit my eyes back in 2017 when I saw some videos of people reacting to his songs, but tbh, the name threw me off - and I can see that many of you were also thrown off by the title of this blog, but you know what? It's not that bad; you get used to it. It's then a name you relate to and respect and listen to. Actually, he was one of them SoundCloud artist on a rise of popularity and I completely avoided him. Now however, having listened to 'changes', I couldn't resist him anymore.
I took out my phone after I had checked through the gate of our campus to see which soulful, white (racist!), and soft guy this was that has produced such a great song - and what I saw completely caught me of the left field! It was XXX... wait, what?!!! Impressed, instantly impressed! Anyways, I put my phone back into my pocket and headed for the class, but the song was already on my mind. Later in that day, it was on repeat and I was mumbling the song, though with my poor knowledge of the actual lyrics, all day long. But it wasn't 'changes' that was topping the charts, it was 'SAD!', both these songs were released together though by XXXTENTACION. I admit I loved the song but not to the point where I would go and listen to more of XXX, or consider putting 'changes' on my upcoming TOP 15 list of Q1 2018, but it was until that reaction video. (Reaction videos are great y'all. It helps you appreciate songs more than you would ever do. The combined joy that you share with the person/s through the screen is something else. Though you can't find people who likes the same music as you do, on YouTube you actually can, and it's amazing!)
It was a reaction video of elder people to XXXTENTACION's (Idk why I am writing him in all caps, guess I'm too excited! I am listening to SAD! though, on repeat right now!) two new singles 'changes' and 'SAD!'. When the first song played, SAD!, and the beat started, and then popped in XXX with his melody and deep lyrics, I was instantly sold! I was like, 'yo! this is some dope music!' and deep too, too deep actually. And then of course played 'changes' and they were, the ELDER people, very impressed by his music - a proof that his music is actually deep and relatable. They were like 'suicide if you ever try to let go? that's unhealthy' and 'oh poor guy, get together you two' and 'please don't give him a hard time' and my favorite of them all, 'you're giving her a hard time'. It was great to have such an enormous introduction to SAD! which I believe is even better than 'changes', but both these songs are really great, and you know what - I might put both these on TOP 15, but we'll see about that. The list is due tomorrow, so we'll know it just in time; I've been waiting just too long for this list!
SAD!, it's such a beautiful song! It really is. It's soft, it flows, it's got some really true lyrics which people who have loved would definitely relate to, it's well sung and well composed - it's not too long, just the right amount of run time. One thing though, I really wanna cry to this song - maybe next time I get all melancholic, I'd play this one and cry out all my tears, or maybe the next time someone breaks my heart, don't worry though I won't 'suicide!'. And what I love most about this song is its vulnerability and humbleness. XXX maybe this breakout, overnight star, but he's letting us know what he actually is: "who am I? Someone that's afraid to let go!". And I love that! I can relate to that, not that I am famous or anything but I can relate to the submissive nature of it. I may be all gathered up, happy, doing great in life, and everything I ever wanted to be, but still I am nothing but your admirer, your lover, your humble partner; who's nothing without you, who is afraid to actually let you go, whose life, literally, depends on you; that's who I am, a scared little kid, afraid to let you go! Not that I am in love or anything, but I've been there - I have been there...
'changes' on the other hand, is one-word describable: soulful! XXX really sings on this one! All in all, both these songs, and the album titled as '?' is great. I would highly recommend you guys to check him out. Don't let the name put you off, this guy is an artist, and he sings great! XXX is a guy who, in such a young age, has seen pain and knows what pain is and how it feels; to be a guy with such emotional maturity at such an immature age, is nothing but a treasure to music. I hope all great things for XXXTENTACION; keep making that great music, man! Keep it up! Always here to support you. #onceaXXXTENTACIONER #alwaysaXXXTENTACIONER!
