October 11, 2019.
Here are the top five highlights from the previous week in my life. I hope these lessons serve you as well.
1: Reading
I'm reading David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. It's a non-fiction book that talks about the advantages of the disadvantages - yeah, read that again! Starting from the famous battle of David and Goliath, where David (a small shepherd) beats down the Goliath (a GIANT with full armor) in one on one battle, it fascinatingly continues from one factual story to another. It shows how we've been thinking wrongly about the entire world, and how much we matter if we rewire our perspectives.
2: Watching
I went to watch Joker twice this week. It is one of those movies that you find something new and satisfying in it every time you see it again. It's a bold, true, violent yet very impactful criticism of our current society. It shows how society crushes those who they don't identity with and then forgets about them, expecting they'd keep quiet or commit suicide. Here, it backfires! We need more Jokers to come out, I say. Highly recommended.
3: Saving Money
For the past month, I've spent hugely! Almost close to 20k on shopping. I've bought a new bag, new clothing, more books, and more books. It's to the point that I've to do something about it. I know that it was the first month of my newly started semester so the expenses would be more than normal, but 20k isn't more than normal at all! There's a YouTube channel by the name of 'PickUpLimes', and stumbling upon this channel helped me take definitive measures on saving money.
4: Wait and Date
So the two vital things I learned that are important for saving money, especially when it comes to shopping, are:
1: Wait. Whenever you come across buying something that you really really want, know that you have to wait there. It's going nowhere, so wait at least a couple of days. Wait and think about if it's a need or desire. And while you wait on it for a week, try looking for other better options. Who knows, by the end of that week, you won't purchase it at all.
2: Date: set Spend-Days. This specifically helps with waiting. I've set my Spend-Days on Thursday, every two weeks. So in a month, I've two Spend Days now. This helps you collect more money to buy the things I really need, and most importantly, helps me wait and think about things if I really need them at all. And if like me you actually wait, you'll definitely find a better deal for it online. So how many Spend Days would you have in a month?
5: Quote
"Goliath didn't get what he wanted, because he was too big." - Malcolm Gladwell
Once again, I'd highly recommend this book. It will really change your perspective on yourself and on the Goliaths of the world. One then starts to value each person and thing on completely different and accurate terms after reading this book. Being always rich, happy, popular, big, strong - they're not always the advantages that we think they are.
God bless!
Meet you next Friday.
