It is better to learn how to
know, than to know. Here are the 5 highlights of my past week of what I learnt
and pondered upon.
1: A New Name (5 Bites Friday)
Not necessarily NEW new, but I had
to tweak it a little bit for the copyright issue. Being a business student, I
must know a great deal about copyrights, patents, etc. but knowing something is
one thing, and then applying it is another. Just recently, Alain de Botton
messaged me Instagram, asking me to stop using his picture as my profile photo.
Yes, Alain de Botton! You can only imagine what I went through. It felt unreal,
insulting, dumb, frustrating, sad, belittling and many things more, all at the same
time. I did however say sorry and removed the picture immediately, which he was
pleased about. Save to say, I handled it well. Then I was reading through a transcript
of a podcast episode from Tim Ferriss’s Podcast Show, and there it was mentioned
that you can copy only a certain percentage of this transcript and not more. At
that moment, it dawned on me that I have been using his weekly mail’s name for
my weekly series of articles. So, I had to change it before I received a text
from him as well. Copyright is very much real, take a close inspection
next time you copy something of others for your own use.
2: What I listened to
I finished a podcast from Tim Ferriss' show with the guest David Allen, the guy
who created GTD (Getting things done). What captured my attention to specifically listen to this podcast was a quote from Allen in the description of this
podcast: “Your head is for having ideas,
not for holding them.” And throughout this podcast Allen shares a lot of
insights about how to keep getting things done efficiently and stop our head
from clogging up with a tangled pile of ideas and thoughts. He also shares his inspiring
journey from being a young student in his late 10s living with another family
to becoming a person who instructed biggest names in corporate and in business
world. Most of his emphasis are only models
and methodical teaching for emptying your head onto a paper and then start
getting those things done according to their urgency, doability, and importance.
How I listen to podcasts: I now use the app ‘Podcasts Go’ for
downloading and subscribing to my favorite podcast shows. I mostly listen to
the ‘Tim Ferriss Show’ he has over 300 episodes and has had guests from all
field of life. I listen to podcast either right after jogging on mornings, or
on my way to University on bike.
3: What I watched
Podcasts have been a transformational
discovery for me, not only because I learn so much from them, but also because I
get recommendations about many other things I can learn afterwards. For example,
in a podcast episode with Gabor Mate (I talked about this episode in my last
5BF), Tim mentioned a documentary by the name of KUMARE. I recently watched
KUMARE, and I was just – wowed! It is such an insightful
documentary. It is about an
Indian-American guy named Vikram, who sets out on a journey to learn from the
monks and gurus of India. But he constantly gets disappointed as they fail to
teach him something valuable. Then, he decides to become a GURU himself, called
KUMARE. This documentary is about the biggest lie he ever told, yet the biggest
truth he ever experienced.

4: Ungentle Shakespeare
I may have mentioned this before
as well that I am studying a course by the name of World Literature in my current semester. And since I wanted to do my graduation in Literature, but couldn’t,
this course has been a great joy for me. We’ve learned about the history of
literature, mainly English, from the ancient ages to the contemporary ones. Moreover,
I approached my class teacher to share some of my own writings and present my
love for English literature, and hopefully learn a thing or two outside of
class as well. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions I have taken in 2019
so far. We’ve now built this rapport between us and we talk about writers,
ideas, and read and check my blogs that I write. But this week, she offered to
give a book with a catchy title: Ungentle Shakespeare. I’ve never been inclined
towards the writers from the renaissance period (I learned about this period in
this class) but now, I am. Anyways, this book is great to hold, and it comes with many of
its specialties, one is that it has the original signature of Shakespeare himself in it – but,
what is most special about this book is that it's the first ever book gifted to me by another enthusiastic
reader and book collector - my class teacher. Thank you for this gift.
5: Quote
“Loisfoeribari” – Estefani (from
the poem: For Estefani by Aracelis Girmay)
To know what this AMAZING and
POWERFUL, yet strange word means, listen to this heart-winning poem on TED-Ed’s YT channel.
Extra: Songs that I listened to
most
- god is dancer (Tiesto, Mabel)
- Blood on your hands (ft. Courtney Preis)
- Without me (Halsey)
- 7 years (Lukas Graham)
- Waste your time (Conor Maynard)
Enjoy! (:
